Barber Heads 3-Back Attack

The Cowboys ground game, critical in complementing the passing of Tony Romo, revolves around its three-back system. At the head of that system is starter Marion Barber. Barber, beginning his fifth season with the Cowboys since they drafted him in the fourth round in 2005, continues to inch closer and closer to the 1,000-yard mark for a season despite losing carries to fellow running backs Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. The three-back system keeps all three fresh and could help the Cowboys late in the season, when many backs around the league are worn down from too many carries. In the season opener, a 34-21 victory over the Tampa Bay Bucs, Barber rushed just 14 times but gained 79 yards for an impressive average of 5.6 yards per carry. He also scored a touchdown. Jones carried six times and Choice twice as the ’Boys relied heavily on their successful passing game. Barber rushed for 975 yards in 2007 with 10 touchdowns and an average of 4.8 yards per carry, but fell off a bit to 885 yards last year with an average of 3.7 and seven touchdowns. He also caught a career-high 52 passes for 417 yards and two more TDs. His career-high for touchdowns is 14, set in 2006. The Cowboys travel to face the Giants (1-0) in their first division game of the season on Sunday Night Football at 8:20 p.m. EST.
